Relax, Indulge, and Celebrate at 1837 Barossa

Wine, Picnic Platters and Events at the Cellar Door

Grab a picnic basket and enter the refreshing new world of 1837 Barossa, where old meets new in a playfully coherent fusion of food, wine, art and experience. It’s where exquisite Roman marble statues look at home next to oversized Insta-worthy modern art sculptures and a life-size Colonel Light bronze overlooks the picturesque Barossa Ranges with commanding ease.

You might think you know what this place is all about, but unless you’ve visited you may be surprised at what you find atop Lyndoch’s Yaldara Drive, a place synonymous with Colonel William Light’s exploration and naming of the Barossa in 1837.

“1837 Barossa has become a very complete picture, we offer a bit of everything for everybody,” says visionary Guido Auchli, who together with wife, Nelly, own the historic estate.

“You can come here and you can be a history buff… but then for people that are more into modern art, we have a modern art trail, for nature lovers you can enjoy one of the best views and sunsets of the Barossa, and for people who are just into food we have a great food offering and obviously we have award winning wines that complement the experiences.”

The 1837 Barossa estate has probably become the most Instagrammable place of the Barossa, with dozens of perfect photo opportunities to pose and post, such as the famous giant Barossa sign, the oversized baroque picture frame, the gigantic wine bottle, the Wings of Barossa sculpture, the historic Barossa Manor to name just a few.

“1837 Barossa has become a venue for every moment. Everyday casual meals, birthdays and family celebrations or just for a tasting of excellent wine.”

- Guido Auchli

With the new grand extension of the cellar door, manager Shane Hodges is ready to welcome visitors to the venue, whether it be for any of 1837 Barossa’s unique tasting experiences, events, casual dining or just to relax with a glass of wine.

With the main restaurant presently closed for an exciting expansion, the food offering at 1837 Barossa centres on affordable casual dining at the Cellar Door and a unique picnic basket experience which allows you to design your own platter by selecting meats, cheeses, breads and condiments from the new wine shop and deli, packed with locally sourced quality produce.

“Our picnic basket experience allows you to pick the food which you and your family really like” says Shane. “Pizzas and entrees ideal for sharing are available as well if you are after some warm food”. All of this can be enjoyed in the modern light-filled cellar door and wine pavilion, a place which makes the most of the indoor-outdoor experience.

The all-new terrace which overlooks 1837 Barossa’s vast vineyard vistas, is bordered by a Carrara marble balustrade with four statues custom-made in Italy, each representing a phase of the winemaking process. Generous windows enhance the indoor experience, and with several areas that can be partitioned off, the space is ideal for private functions or business meetings.

“For business seminars, functions or parties, we could have up to 50 guests,” Shane explains. “You’ve got the semi-circle balustrade where the statues are, it’s the perfect place to have a ceremony for an intimate wedding.”

Wine tasting at 1837 Barossa can be as comprehensive or as simple as you like, with experiences of up to three hours that include vineyard walks and helicopter rides, or uncomplicated at-your-leisure tasting flights with informative written descriptions of each wine.

If you sign up for one of the longer packages, passionate principal winemaker of 1837 Barossa, Guido has designed a tasting experience which walks guests through the three elements of professional tasting – appearance, aroma and palate.

“For those guests who seek more knowledge about wine, we give them a deep understanding of the art of wine tasting, so when they leave, they will appreciate wines differently,” Shane adds. Like his exceptional wines, Guido understands that creating a venue that invites, excites and inspires is all about striking the perfect balance, something to which 1837 Barossa refreshingly aspires.

“This is really the place where you bring your kids, your family, you come here with friends, you relax, you wind down and enjoy the view with a glass of wine,” Guido says with a smile.

“What more could you want?”
