SPONSORED by Barossa Village

Being proactive in planning their retirement was important for Port Lincoln couple Jim and Gayle Hesselschwerdt, who are looking forward to moving into their brand new retirement living unit in Angaston, later this year.

Jim and Gayle spent many months extensively researching their options, and chose Barossa Village after comparing retirement villages throughout South Australia.

What drew you to decide on an independent living unit at Barossa Village?

We felt that the contract itself was black and white. One of the areas of disappointment with many other providers were the grey areas in their contracts, but the Barossa Village contract is so clear.  Their honesty and openness up front particularly appealed to us.

We’re fairly private people, so living in a smaller cluster appealed to us over a large village concept.

Also, the locations that Barossa Village has chosen in Tanunda and Angaston for their most recent developments are close to shopping.

While we’re mobile and active now, this might not be the case in 10 years, and living close to facilities will help us to maintain our independence.  Other villages we looked at were three to four kilometres away from shops.

Compared to other retirement living units, they were expensive for what you got and the Barossa Village units in Angaston offer a lot for the price.

How was your experience working with Barossa Village?

We asked a lot of questions and Barossa Village presented themselves very well.  We even asked their staff what it was like to work for the organisation and were happy with their feedback.  We expect honesty and integrity and we’re very pleased with Barossa Village as an organisation.

What we have appreciated is the flexibility and generosity of spirit displayed by everyone we’ve been in contact with at Barossa Village.

How they’ve conducted themselves surpasses anything we’ve expected and we really appreciate that.  There are lots of other things going on in our lives and Barossa Village has taken a lot of stress out of this decision.

There’s a generosity of spirit in how Barossa Village runs their business.

What was it about the units that appealed to you, compared to other units that you viewed?

Coming from Port Lincoln where we have lived all our lives, we preferred to be by the sea, but some of the prices on the coast and in the hills were ridiculous and the units were nowhere near as good as what Barossa Village is offering.

Most units that we looked at had very small room sizes and garages, and the designs were suited to lifestyles 20 years ago, when people had smaller cars and lived differently.  These days, people have large cars to tow caravans and need decent sized garages.  This was an important factor for us.

Having two bathrooms was also important to us, as we expect to have friends and family visit, and many units were more expensive with just one bathroom.

When you factor in the design features of the Barossa Village units, with wide doors and hallways, large rooms, generous storage and the size of garages, the pricing at Barossa Village is extremely attractive. The designs of these units aren’t restricted by the confines of a large retirement village development.

We like that the concept of neighbourhood clusters gives Barossa Village the ability to adapt their homes to modern retirement lifestyles.

Barossa Village has eight independent living units under construction in Angaston, due to be completed by April.  The units were designed and built by local companies, including JBG Architects and Underwood Carpentry and Building, and are priced from $325,000.  Each unit has two bathrooms and you have the choice of single and double garages.
